Tooth Restoration
Tooth Restoration Melbourne North West

Tooth restoration is a dental solution to save teeth that have been damaged. Also known as dental restoration, this treatment can restore integrity and function to your tooth structure to save it instead of removing it. Our philosophy at Dental Couture is to prevent dental problems if possible and to restore function before removing teeth because the longer you maintain your natural teeth, the longer your jawbone and bite integrity remain intact.
Dental treatments and technology have improved drastically yet sometimes accidents, trauma, and other unforeseen problems like dental caries can cause problems to teeth. Because of the many ways damage can take place, there are also many treatments available to suit each patient. We offer both direct and indirect restorations and will work with you to find the best solution for your situation. A comprehensive exam and diagnosis will help us determine the extent of damage and we will discuss all tooth restoration options with you before we create a treatment plan.
Our skilled dentists at Dental Couture at Melbourne North West are committed to ensuring the look and function of your teeth are properly restored to your satisfaction. We know your teeth are important and problems can be traumatic for socialising and confidence, which is why we will provide prompt treatment and offer family affordable payments plans, if needed.

Direct or Indirect Restorations?
Indirect restorations
are those that are prepared and built outside of your mouth. That’s because we first have to use diagnostic tools such as 3D imaging, moulds of your teeth, and x-rays. This information is sent to a lab where your prosthesis or restoration will be created for a perfect fit.
We may fit you with a temporary restoration while the permanent one is being made. Once complete, you will have another visit where we affix the restorations onto your natural teeth, which will restore the function and integrity of the tooth structure.
Direct restorations
are created and placed while you are sitting in the dental chair. Often done in just one visit, this type of tooth restoration includes a malleable or soft material that can be used to fill a cavity or bond a tooth crack. If you are having a cavity filled, you will be given options for the material used.

How Tooth Restorations are Made
Tooth restorations made be created in an office laboratory or external laboratory. Restorations that require time to make include dental crowns, bridges, implants and dentures and are made with a variety of materials including gold, silver, porcelain, composite resin and glass ionomer cement. You may be given an option for CEREC same-day crowns if you want your restoration quickly. During your initial exam and evaluation, your dentist will go over all restoration options and help you choose the best one for you.
As your indirect restorations are being made, your teeth will be prepared to hold the restoration so it is secure and comfortable. We will remove parts of your teeth that are decayed or structurally unsound due to damage. Once complete, a temporary will be fitted for you to wear until your permanent restoration is ready. If you are receiving a direct restoration, your tooth will be prepared by removing decay and damage and then the restoration will be placed immediately after.

Risk Factors for Tooth Restorations
Risk factors vary by the type of tooth restoration and the extent of damage prior to the restoration. For example, deep cavities may have affected the nerves, which can leave pain and extreme temperature sensitivity. In this case, a root canal treatment may be necessary if the pain doesn’t resolve after a dental filling is placed. If a tooth suffered severe damage before a crown or bridge, the tooth structure may continue to weaken even after restoration, which may increase the risk of further fracturing in the future. We will do our best to mitigate these situations and discuss the extent of damage as well as the treatment options available.
Dental implants assume the highest risk due to the nature of the treatment. Although low, some risk factors include failure to integrate with the bone, flap breakdown, excess bleeding, infection and peri-implantitis or destructive inflammation. And while low, short- or long-term mechanical failure of the dental implant is also a risk factor. Our experienced dentists will use the appropriate diagnostic tools to determine your oral health, bone structure and integrity and discuss if dental implants are a good option for you.
