What actually counts as a dental emergency?
Not every dental problem needs immediate attention, but some absolutely do. Here is how to tell the difference:
True emergencies requiring same-day care:
- Severe, unrelenting tooth pain that prevents sleep or function.
- Knocked-out adult tooth (Time-critical—act within 30 minutes).
- Broken tooth with sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek.
- Facial swelling that is spreading or affecting breathing.
- Dental Abscess (painful swelling often accompanied by fever).
- Broken jaw or significant facial trauma.
- Uncontrolled bleeding after a recent extraction.
Urgent (usually can wait 24–48 hours):
- Lost filling or crown (unless causing significant pain).
- Chipped tooth without pain.
- Broken denture.
- Loose or poking orthodontic wire.
When in doubt, call us. We would rather reassure you that something can wait than have you suffer unnecessarily or risk a problem worsening.
What to do right now (Before you arrive)
For severe toothache: Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen is often effective for dental inflammation). Rinse gently with warm salt water. Apply a cold compress to your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off). Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods.
For a knocked-out tooth: This is a 30-minute window. Handle the tooth by the crown only (the white part). If dirty, rinse briefly with milk or saline—do NOT scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket. If that isn’t possible, keep it moist in a container of milk or tucked inside your cheek. Time is the biggest factor in saving the tooth.
For a broken tooth: Rinse your mouth gently. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. Save any broken pieces. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue.
For an abscess or facial swelling: Do NOT apply heat; this can cause the infection to spread. Take pain relief as needed. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, head to the ER.
Prevention beats emergency care
Most dental emergencies are preventable. Regular check-ups catch problems early—a small filling today prevents a root canal emergency later. That “niggling sensitivity” you’ve been ignoring is usually a warning sign.
At Dental Couture, our comprehensive approach identifies potential issues before they become crises. Prevention is always gentler and more cost-effective than emergency management.
Emergency care for anxious patients
If fear has kept you away from the dentist, we understand. We won’t judge you for your dental history. We offer sedation options and take the time to explain every step, ensuring you feel in control even in an urgent situation.
